October 17th

On this evenings Farm Hour, Sonia Janiszewski called in from her family farm in Delhi to chat with us about a couple projects she leads including, the new online resource for farmers and landowners, CATSKILL FARM LINK and the complementary beginning farmer group Catskills Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Trainer, CRAFT. I will also be speaking about the benefits of planting cover crops talking specifically about the autumn planting of winter rye.  Cornell University has a great online tool for decisions about covercrops, what to plant, when, how to achieve a wide range of benefits from nitrogen scavenging, to reducing surface compaction.  Later in the hour we will here a short clip of Layne Beaty from the USDA oral history archive.  Layne Beaty was one of the pioneers in farm reporting hosting the The National Farm and Home Hour airring over the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) from 1928 to 1960, and was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and NBC as a public service program for farmers and homemakers.  From 1954 to 1980, Beaty served as Chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Radio and Television Service.
