Jim Gerritsen President of the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association will be calling in from the Wood Prairie Farm in Maine to talk with us about the recent ruling from Judge Naomi Buchwald handing down her ruling on a motion to dismiss the case of Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association et al v. Monsanto.

COMMISSIONER REMINDS FARMERS OF MARCH 15 CROP INSURANCE DEADLINE
New York State Agriculture Commissioner Darrel J. Aubertine announced some major changes in crop insurance that will benefit New York growers. For the first time, producers can purchase up to eighty-five percent protection for corn and soybeans in New York, up from seventy-five percent. In addition, the insurable price election for corn silage has been raised to $50/ton for this insurance year, up from $42.50 last year   The Commissioner also reminded them of the upcoming March 15 deadline for purchasing or modifying crop insurance policies for the 2012 growing season.The Meat Processing Laboratory will be having their  next Farm Viability grant funded workshops, Animal Handling and “Hoof to Retail” at SUNY Cobleskill (Cobleskill, NY  12043) on Saturday, March 10th from 9 AM to 4 PM. “Hoof to Retail” Beef which will allow the producer to evaluate body condition of live animals and see how this translates to carcass yield, quality grade and marketability. We will also process one half of the carcass into retail cuts to allow for understanding of final volume of retail product. We have been collecting information since the inception of the grant, and have more data to share beyond the animals we have for this workshop.  This is taking the Hoof to Rail concept through to retail product.
